What is MECC Excellence Competition?

MECC Excellence Competition is a contest in English which is organized by the council every year from 2017 to now. The competition is only between pupils of grammar schools.

The overall objective of this competition is to promote excellence at school all over Mali.

The specific objectives of this competion are:

  • Attract the attention of pupils about the importance of English;
  • Cultivate the spirit of competition in pupils;
  • Identify the best students and encourage them in their learning process;

This year, we did the 3rd edition of the competition. It has been organized in three (3) different steps which are:

  • The selection step
  • The written test
  • The oral test

The selection step

This first step of the contest has been done on Sunday,January 19th, 2020 at Bloc Z (Bamako) and at ILLC (Kati) from 03:00 pm to 05:00 pm. During this step, we got 104 candidates from 39 grammar schools whose 33 grammar schools in Bamako, 5 grammar schools in Kati and 1 grammar school in Baguineda. We had two (2) different centers which are Bamako’s center and Kati’s center. Bamako’s center govered the candidates of Bamako and Baguineda and Kati’s center govered only the candidates of Kati. So at the end of this step, we maintained the top fifty (50) amoug the 104 candidates for second step which is the written one.

The second step of the competition took place on Sunday, January 26th, 2020 at Bloc Z (Bamako) and at ILLC (Kati) from 09:00 am to 12:00 pm. There were 50 candidates from 30 grammar schools whose 24 grammar schools in Bamako, 5 grammar schools in Kati and 1 grammar school in Baguineda during this step. At the end of this step, the top 25 of the candidates have been maintained for the last step which is the oral one.

The last step of the contest has been done on Sunday, February 02nd, 2020. We had only one center (Bloc Z) for this step because there were only 6 candidates from Kati, 1 candidate from Baguineda and the 18 others from Bamako. They were from 14 grammar schools whose 10 grammar schools in Bamako, 3 grammar schools in Kati and 1 grammar school in Baguineda. During this oral test, we had some marking criteria on which the marking comity marked the different candidates. Then at the end of the test we maintained the top 15 of them by dividing the sum of their three (3) notes (the note of the selection step,the written test and the oral test) by 3.

The laureates of the 3rd edition of MECC excellence competition come from 11 different grammar schools whose 8 grammar schools in Bamako, 2 grammar schools in Kati and 1 grammar school in Baguineda.
